Loews Hotels traces its roots to 1946, when brothers Laurence "Larry" Tisch and Preston Robert "Bob" Tisch purchased their first property, the Laurel-in-the-Pines resort in Lakewood, New Jersey. The brothers ran their hotels hands-on, personally overseeing kitchens, guest services, and maintenance, and quickly expanded, acquiring hotels in Atlantic City and developing the landmark Americana Hotel in Bal Harbour, Florida, in 1956.
